Board & Train Services: Transformative Training in a Real World Setting
At Master of Hounds, we offer a Board and Train program that takes a hands-on, real-world approach to dog training. Whether your dog struggles with behavior challenges or simply needs to fine-tune their obedience, our program offers lasting results through structured, immersive training. We work with a limited number of dogs at a time to ensure each receives the focused attention they need in a home environment.
With over 30 years of experience in the Bay Area, we take pride in our reward-based, balanced training approach. We use both positive reinforcement and appropriate corrections to build healthy, reliable behaviors. Every dog is different, which is why we tailor our approach to meet the specific needs of your dog, ensuring their success both at home and in the world.
We’re located on the Emeryville/Oakland border but serve the greater Bay Area including: Berkeley, El Cerrito, Albany, Alameda, Marin county, San Francisco, and surrounding areas.

Puppy Head Start: Setting the Foundation for Lifelong Success
The Puppy Head Start program is designed for puppies at least 16 weeks old who are still in the formative stages of their development. This program focuses on addressing common puppy behaviors like mouthing, nipping, and jumping, while also introducing essential foundation skills through positive reinforcement training. We work on the following things during camp:
- Curbing attention-seeking behaviors
- Socialization, confidence building, and environmental exposure
- Appropriate play and handling/grooming
- Foundation obedience (sit, down, loose leash walking, stay, place, leave it, recall)
- Impulse control
- Handler focus and engagement
Many of our puppy graduates come back to us as adults for their formal off-leash obedience and return as their family’s Dream Dog! Puppy Head Start grads eligible for discounted programs.
2 and 4 week programs available starting at $2800.
The Confidence & Control Program: Master Your Dog’s Behavior
Our Confidence & Control Program is perfect for dogs who need to build confidence, trust, and reliable skills. You’ve heard of “doggy boot camp” or “stay and train”, this immersive program is designed for dogs who may struggle with minor nuisance behaviors like barking, digging, jumping, leash pulling, not listening, or being easily distracted. During the program, your dog will experience:
- Training plan tailored to you and your family’s lifestyle
- Real-world proofing
- Learning key behaviors like heel, going to place/bed, sit, down, stay, leave it, and an off-leash recall
- Increased impulse control, focus, and engagement
- Structured play, socialization, and outings
Your dog will return home with a higher level of obedience, trust, and social skills, ready to engage confidently in a variety of environments.
4-6 week programs starting at $4800.
Reactive Dog Program: A Path to Calm & Control
The Reactive Dog Program is a behavior modification program for those dogs that struggle around other dogs, animals, people, or environments.
Whether it’s reactivity on walks, at the park, or within the home, we’ll help your dog develop the skills they need to respond calmly and appropriately. Program length varies according to severity of reactivity, but average time is 4-8 weeks.
Owners must be committed to continuing their dog’s training at home for all programs. While our Board & Train programs are designed to create and instill healthier habits and behaviors, lasting success depends on consistent follow-through at home. We provide follow-up lessons with all of our programs and access to lifetime support for all of our graduates.
4 week program starting at $4800.
Board and Train Frequently Asked Questions
Where will my dog stay?
How will my adult dog be trained to off-leash reliability?
Isn’t an e-collar harsh/inhumane?
We have a modern, humane, and proven method of introducing dogs across all personality types to the e-collar. Our motto is low and slow when it comes to the e-collar. We find their lowest working level, teach them how to turn off the e-collar stimulation, and spend weeks building fluency over a variety of behaviors. We then train you how to properly use the device as well.
When used properly, e-collars are incredibly safe, effective, and humane and allow greater freedom than any other dog training tool.
What will my dog’s day look like?
We do an average of 3-4 training sessions spaced throughout the day. Outings can range from different parks, stores, outdoor shopping areas, the beach, or a local hiking trail.
Downtime is just as important as getting out and about! We make sure your dog is getting breaks either in their crate or decompressing on their cot.
After dinner, dogs are matched in pairs or trios to play and hang out under supervision.
Last potty breaks are between 9-10PM, then it’s off in their crates to sleep for the night!
What will my dog’s stay look like?
We spend the first week building trust, forming a relationship, and creating handler engagement with your dog while hand-feeding during training sessions to build fundamentals. This week is all about acclimatizing, confidence building, and just getting your dog settled into his new routine.
Week Two is all about skill acquisition. This is the big learning week when it comes to new behaviors. We need to teach your dog what TO do before we ever teach them what not to do.
Week Three is when we begin the generalization process. That means practicing their newly acquired skills in different places. Your dog will be going on field trips and getting a lot of repetitions in to build strong, reliable behaviors.
Week Four is all about proofing. That means your dog is working under a variety of distractions, being brought up to our training standards, and if enrolled in our 4-week program, getting ready to make their transition home!
Will my dog forget me during his stay?
How often will I get updates?
How do I maintain the training once my dog is home?
